about
From ‘The Question.’ A song about finding new ways to move through the world and about learning to forgive yourself for the old ways. This one felt good to sing all year, thinking about cities and all the lives circling each other and everyone trying and failing and trying again in a million different ways to make it ok for themselves and the people they love.
lyrics
I came to see the flower stands, the vegetables, the cigarettes
the subway station bucket man, the headphones and the heat
I thought that I might try again, the living and the breathing
but the living and the breathing don't come easy
I used to be a waste of time, an empty bottle lying down
a trap door with the latches gone, hanging by a hinge
Now I guess I'm something else, a raven on an overpass
a wanderer, a silver ghost, a beacon
Before, I saw it everywhere, in car windows, the guarded stare
the hollow eyes, the hunted fear, I had to look away
I thought that I might lose my breath, the living and the coming death
the living and the aftermath, the fade
I used to be a waste of time, a burning match lit underground
a figure in the shadowland , a feather in a cage
Now I hope I’m something else, a blinding flash, a fragment spell
a bird released from some old bell, escaping

Title track was the first I'd ever heard of Jeff's work and it struck me like a ten-ton hammer.
Was a perfect fit for the small-town college I was attending at the time, not far from train tracks itself.
Every time I hear this, I can see the amber light of the street lamps and think about a few walks I made around campus in the dead of night.
Still haven't grabbed hold of the life I've been given as firmly as I ought to, but this song soothes my regret...and the chorus reminds me.... moonandstar8765

The instrumentation and songwriting in this album is really top-tier. Aofie is one of my favorite folk/alt-country artists and she performs wonderfully, bringing her unique tone of voice to this project. This album was my first step into Aofie's artistry, and is firmly one of my favorite albums. rileyridgway
