about
From the new album coming soon, ‘Outsiders,’ this song started as a poem on tour after seeing two horses shrouded in fog on an early morning drive. I was listening to the news and feeling so struck by the amount of humanity and animal rage that can exist simultaneously; trembling anger and deep empathy, hatred and faith, prejudice and love. The poem was an attempt to explore the weight of our animal selves, that flashing and instinctual fear that makes us small and blindly intolerant. And that distinctly human capacity to rise up out of fear, to learn and grow and change and get free.
lyrics
Two dark horses just appearing, early morning fog
Breath like engines overheating, rising up and gone
Holy light across the pasture, barbed wire fences built to trap them
Two dark horses running faster, than they’ve ever run
Two dark horses, sweating, leaning, thunderous and wild
Flanked in low mist slowly leaving, red sun on the rise
Scars where darker forces whipped them, filled their mouths with blood and bit them
Two dark horses flying, lifting, weightless just this once
two dark horses, hallelujah, watch them disappear
powerful as dancers moving, low against the air
Thunder on the black horizon, rolling wild electric skyline
two dark horses, storm behind them, freedom finally come

Title track was the first I'd ever heard of Jeff's work and it struck me like a ten-ton hammer.
Was a perfect fit for the small-town college I was attending at the time, not far from train tracks itself.
Every time I hear this, I can see the amber light of the street lamps and think about a few walks I made around campus in the dead of night.
Still haven't grabbed hold of the life I've been given as firmly as I ought to, but this song soothes my regret...and the chorus reminds me.... moonandstar8765

The instrumentation and songwriting in this album is really top-tier. Aofie is one of my favorite folk/alt-country artists and she performs wonderfully, bringing her unique tone of voice to this project. This album was my first step into Aofie's artistry, and is firmly one of my favorite albums. rileyridgway
