lyrics
and if you go walking, in a world made of stars
the neon reflection, of your face in the dark
and the heat of the city, in the curve of your palm
look away, my darling, look away my loved one
and god bless the terror, that brings you to bed
your lily white knuckles, your bruising, your breath
from the dark where you called out, and the things that you said
look away, my darling, look away my dear friend
you’re not alone, you’re not alone, you’re not alone
and under your eyelids, it’s quiet, it’s safe
but he stole the sun from where it lay on your face
and never a day you don’t cry out to wake
look away, my darling, look away, look away
look away, my darling, look away, look away
and how deep the water that carries you home
the warm cotton smell of the clean forest floor
and drifting in dreams, let it go, let it go
look away, my darling, look away from it all
look away, my darling, look away from it all
It's tough to pick a favorite track off this album, but there's something about Hard Year that cuts deeper than the rest. I spent many days driving in and out of the Catskill mountains and this album was my compass. dthompsthirty2
Title track was the first I'd ever heard of Jeff's work and it struck me like a ten-ton hammer.
Was a perfect fit for the small-town college I was attending at the time, not far from train tracks itself.
Every time I hear this, I can see the amber light of the street lamps and think about a few walks I made around campus in the dead of night.
Still haven't grabbed hold of the life I've been given as firmly as I ought to, but this song soothes my regret...and the chorus reminds me.... moonandstar8765
